The island's history is equally impressive, with archaeological sites that date back to the ancient Minoan civilization. Knossos, the largest Bronze Age archaeological site on Crete, is a must-visit for history buffs, offering a glimpse into one of the earliest advanced societies in Europe.
Cretan culture is a vibrant tapestry of traditions, music, and cuisine. Heraklion International Airport "Nikos Kazantzakis" (IATA: HER, ICAO: LGIR) is the primary airport on the island of Crete, Greece, and the second busiest in the country. Named after the famous Greek writer Nikos Kazantzakis, the airport is located approximately 5 kilometers east of Heraklion, the island's capital. It serves as a crucial gateway for tourists visiting Crete, particularly during the summer months when it handles a significant influx of charter and scheduled flights from across Europe. The airport features a single terminal that manages both domestic and international flights, offering various amenities such as duty-free shops, dining options, and car rental services.
Ground Transportation:
Once you have landed in Crete, make your way to baggage claim using the directions within the airport. Once you have secured your luggage, make your way to the "Arrival Waiting Haul".
